Feral Flocking Farm
Our Family Adventure
When we moved to our small town ten years ago, I looked around at our two acres and knew we could make dreams come true. Of course, I waited until our fourth baby was six weeks old to purchase our first chickens. No time like the present, amiright?
The rest of this journey is history. We started with eight chicks, which seemed a reasonable number. However, due to a phenomenon called "Chicken Math", within three weeks, we had 13 chicks. The following year, we added 11 more. On year three, we hatched or purchased 31 new chicks, three heritage turkey poults, and three meat turkeys. We had four separate coops in the backyard and all of the kids owned "chicken boots".
Since that time, we continue to add new chicks each year. We also raise our own meat turkeys for our family Thanksgiving. It brings us joy to know where at least some of our food comes from, and to honor the life of the animals we eat, knowing they led a pretty amazing life and will provide us needed sustenance.
Our five children are involved in all parts of the chicken process, from raising and snuggling chicks and poults, gathering eggs, feeding, and even cleaning coops. This is a family adventure and it has helped connect us both to each other and to Mother Nature.
We're glad you're here and we hope you learn from our journey.
