About Our Birds
Our birds are fed a local, organic feed from a Williamston mill. They free range on three-quarter acre all day, every day. We gather eggs daily and store them properly. Although we have roosters mixed in with our flock, no chicks can begin to develop, as it takes seven days of 99 degrees and 60% humidity for the process to start. Our meat birds are raised on the same organic feed and also free-range, which allows them to build that delicious muscle for the Thanksgiving table. All of our birds are named and receive ample kiddo cuddles, even the giant turkey tom and the surly roosters.
We have many breeds of chickens in our flock. Our hens are plymouth barred rocks, starlight green eggers, welsummers, cream crested leg bar, black copper maran, black sex link, olive egger, americana, and light brahmas. Our three roosters are a houdan, a cochin, and a isbar.
Our turkeys are all black Spanish. Black Spanish are a heritage breed of turkeys. This means that they are smart, self sufficient, and friendly. Our tom, Mashed Potato, is a big sweetie. He follows us around the yard, showing off how handsome he is. Our five turkey hens, Gravy, Sweet Potato, Cranberry, Green Bean, and Rolls, keep the peace in our yard. They keep the roosters in line and make sure the chicken hens are getting enough food. They are fierce broody mamas and love to chase the crows away from the treats we offer the flock.
Our annual meat turkeys are broad breasted bronze or white. They are bred to grow quickly, carry a significant amount of weight, and then be processed in the fall. Our meat turkeys are spoiled rotten and can weigh anywhere from 20 to a whopping 42 pounds finished.
All in all, each of our birds is special and loved. They improve our life and we try to return the favor.
Chicken and Turkey Eggs
We sell unwashed, fresh chicken and turkey eggs for $6/dozen. These eggs are safe on your counter, because they still have the protective, antibacterial coating, called the bloom, that the hen coats the egg with when it's laid. Unwashed eggs can stay on the counter for up to a month or in the fridge for three months, but we doubt our delicious eggs will last that long in your house.
Hatching Eggs
We sell our chicken eggs for $12/dozen. Turkey hatching eggs are $20/dozen. With an order, we will pen the birds for a few days to increase the likelihood of fertilized eggs. However, with the ratios we have, the odds are pretty good on a regular basis.
Meat Turkeys
Each year, we raise five to ten meat birds for Thanksgiving. These birds are fed the best feed and enjoy all the same foraging space as our other birds. Each bird is fattened at the end of their life and processed in a reputable facility.
